Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Some of the best pitching matchups this season took place between the Stone Crabs and Hammerheads during the first half. On two occasions, Jacob Faria went up against Jose Fernandez, whose first start upon his return from Tommy John Surgery came at Charlotte Sports Park. On Friday night, two righthanders went head-to-head in a classic duel between German Marquez and Jeff Brigham. In the end, the Hammerheads repeated Thursday night's formula with one in the sixth and two more in the ninth on the way to a 3-0 shutout before a crowd of 2,055.
Showing his hardest fastball of the season, Marquez was completely dialed in by the time he took the mound following a 24 minute lightning delay. In the first and second, he worked through singles from Austin Dean and Avery Romero, using a strikeout to retire the side in both innings. At the top of the order in the third, Yefri Perez lined a double into right center and Justin Bohn singled him to third. Once again, Marquez went to the well and struck out Austin Dean looking for the final out.
Brigham, brought over at the trade deadline from the Dodgers organization, surrendered a two out double to Braxton Lee in the third. Hector Guevara then walked on four straight as rain pelted the diamond for most of the night. Justin Williams came up with two runners on, but grounded out to short for the final out. In the fourth, Armando Araiza's bad luck started when he lined out to Brian Anderson at third with runners at the corners and two outs.
The Hammerheads did just enough to strike first in the sixth for the second straight night. Marquez (6-12) fanned Bohn for his seventh strikeout to start the inning, but let Dean get on with an opposite field single into right. Working ahead of the next two hitters, the 20-year-old lost his curveball and hit Anderson and Romero to load the bases with one out. Harold Riggins came up hitless in his first two at bats, but got the visitors on the board with a sacrifice fly to center for his 33rd run batted in and a 1-0 lead.
Araiza came up again during Brigham's (2-1) final inning in the seventh following a one out single by Jace Conrad. On a 2-2 pitch, Conrad took off for second and watched in disbelief as Araiza lined out to Anderson for an inning-ending double play. Steve Ascher came out for the top of the ninth after cruising through the eighth with three groundball outs. Romero led off with a soft double over third base, but it got things started for the bottom half of the order. Riggins came through again with a towering double off the wall in right center to make it 2-0 and put Ascher in trouble. A wild pitch brought the infield in, and Felix Munoz grounded out to second for the first out. Kyle McKenzie walked catcher Chris Hoo to put runners at the corners for number nine hitter Cameron Flynn, whose .192 average coming in didn't deter him from crushing another double to right for a 3-0 lead. The final two innings belonged to Esmerling De La Rosa, who struck out three without allowing a hit on the way to his second save.
The series wraps up on Saturday night at 7:00 PM when Hunter Wood (1-3, 2.73 ERA) faces Luis Castillo (1-3, 5.02 ERA). It's Back to School Night, and Charlotte Sports Park will be rocking with a postgame fireworks show, so visit www.stonecrabsbaseball.com or call 941-206-HITS (4487) to order your tickets now!
