Springfield Cardinals News Release
SPRINGDALE, Ar. -- The Springfield Cardinals crushed the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, 9-1, before 6,965 fans at Arvest Ballpark on Friday night.
The Naturals (9-18) jumped in front early with a run against RHP Chris Ellis (W, 2-0) in the bottom of the second. With one on and two away, LF Anderson Miller rifled an RBI double into the right field corner, plating DH Luis Villegas from second base for the 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals (15-11) responded right away in the top of the third against LHP Foster Griffin (L, 2-3). After a leadoff walk from C Jeremy Martinez, RF Thomas Spitz bunted himself on with a single. SS Tommy Edman loaded the bases with a single to center, before CF Blake Drake tied the game when he worked an RBI walk, forcing home Martinez. 2B Ramon Urias then bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, although it did score Spitz from third base, providing the 2-1 lead for Springfield.
The Cardinals kept swinging away in the top of the fifth. C Jeremy Martinez started the inning with a double to right field. Two outs later with Martinez at third, Drake rocked an RBI double to left-center field, bringing home Martinez. Urias laced an RBI single to left field, followed by a free pass from 1B John Nogowski to chase Griffin from the mound. Facing RHP Jacob Bodner, LF Victor Roache blew the game open with a three-run blast to right field, his eighth home run of the year, moving into a tie for the league lead in homers and increasing the Cardinals lead to 7-1.
Springfield kept swinging away in the top of the sixth. DH Chris Chinea started the stanza with a single and moved to second on a line drive base hit by Martinez. Spitz worked a walk to load the bases with no outs. One out later, Drake notched his third RBI of the night with a fielder's choice that brought home Chinea and put runners at the corners. Urias then came through again with his second two-out RBI single of the game, plating Martinez to make it 9-1.
After five one-run innings, Ellis gave way to RHP Ramon Santos, who blanked the Naturals in the sixth and seventh. LHP Ian McKinney took over with a 1-2-3 eighth, before working out of a bases-loaded jam with no damage done in the ninth to close the 9-1 win for the Cardinals.
