Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - Before the sellout crowd of 7,797 fans at Hammons Field, the Springfield Cardinals blew away the San Antonio Missions, 8-3, on the 4th of July.

After a quick 1-2-3 top of the first from RHP Thomas Lee (W, 7-3), the Cardinals (4-5, 34-45) jumped in front with three runs against rehabbing San Diego Padres RHP Dale Thayer (L, 0-1) in the bottom of the first. With one away, LF Mike O'Neill drove a double to deep left field to get into scoring position. O'Neill quickly came home on an RBI single from RF Anthony Garcia, opening the 1-0 lead. One out later, with Garcia at second base, 2B Bruce Caldwell crushed a two-run home run into Homers Landing in right field, increasing the advantage to 3-0.

San Antonio (4-5, 35-44) got on the board against Lee in the top of the second. With one away, 3B Duanel Jones pulled a solo home run to left field for the Missions first run. Lee, though, promptly retired the next two batters, getting the Cardinals out of the frame with a 3-1 lead.

Springfield then continued to swing away in the bottom of the second against RHP Dennis O'Grady. 3B Patrick Wisdom started the stanza with a ground-rule double to straightaway center field. With Wisdom at second, SS Aledmys Diaz struck out on a wild pitch that bounced away from C Adolfo Reina, enabling Diaz to dart to first base and Wisdom to move to third on the play. After Diaz moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lee, CF Charlie Tilson lined a two-run single to left-center field, bringing both runners home. Tilson then swiped his way to second base with his 26th steal of the year, before racing home on an RBI double from O'Neill, stretching the lead to 6-1.

The Cardinals struck for their seventh run in the bottom of the third. Caldwell opened the inning with a triple to right-center field. Two outs later, Diaz rocketed an RBI single past 3B Duanel Jones to bring in Caldwell and make it 7-1.

Lee had posted a quick three-up-three-down third and then retired the first two outs in the fourth, but the Missions chipped away with another home run. With two down and the bases clear in the fourth, RF Hunter Renfroe skied a solo shot to left field, bringing the Missions within five runs, 7-2.

Lee continued to deal in the fifth and sixth, working around a hit in each scoreless inning to keep the Cardinals lead at five runs. However, San Antonio chipped the deficit down by one in the top of the seventh. Renfroe ripped a triple to right-center to open the inning. He then darted in from third base on an RBI groundout by 3B Duanel Jones, cutting the Missions deficit to 7-3.

The Cardinals responded right away in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the bases clear, C Michael Ohlman crushed a solo home run, his eighth of the year, swinging the Cardinals back in front by five runs, 8-3.

All-Star RHP Kyle Barraclough took over for the top of the ninth and slammed the door with a 1-2-3 inning, closing the 8-3 win for Springfield.
