Springfield Cardinals News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - The Springfield Cardinals needed a short memory on Sunday as they took on the Hooks less than 24 hours after they walked-off with a 6-5 win on Saturday night at Whataburger Field erasing a two run deficit in the last two innings of the game.

Springfield sent righty Trevor Rosenthal to the hill who took a no decision his last time out despite throwing seven shutout innings. The Hooks countered with Brett Oberholtzer coming off a six shutout inning performance of his own in Midland.

The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard Sunday afternoon as they plated five first inning runs. After Kolten Wong tripled to start the game, Jermaine Curtis drove him home with a single. Two batters later, Kyle Conley launched a two-run homer to make it 3-0. A two out single by Jose Garcia allowed Xavier Scruggs to come up and he belted a two-run homer to left to give Springfield a 5-0 lead.

Corpus Christi answered with a run without even getting a hit. A one-out walk was issued to Jonathan Villar who promptly stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Martinez to make it 5-1.

Trevor Rosenthal would go five innings in his outing allowing just the one run on four hits while striking out two. Justin Wright tossed two thirds of two hit ball and Kevin Thomas threw one and a third scoreless out of the bullpen.

The Cardinals add four more to their total in the 8th as Jake Shaffer delivered an RBI single and scored on a balk and Erik Abreu's error with the bases loaded forced in two more runs to give Springfield a 9-1 advantage. They'd add another run in the 9th as Jermaine Curtis doubled and scored on an RBI single by Oscar Taveras to grab a 10-1 lead.

Jesse Simpson pitched a flawless 8th and Chris Corrigan pitched a scoreless 9th to finish off the victory for the Cardinals. Jermaine Curtis finished 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Springfield will conclude their series with Corpus Christi Monday night. The Redbirds will send Richard Castillo to the mound against Jake Buchanan of the Hooks. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.

The Cardinals return to Hammons Field Wednesday, May 30th for a six-game homestand against San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or by call (417) 863-2143.
