Springfield Cardinals News Release
Little Rock, AR - Coming off of a homestand which saw the Cardinals go 6-1 in seven games, Springfield looked to keep their momentum going in game one of their three-game set in Little Rock against the Travelers.
Springfield sent lefty Nick Additon to the mound for his first road start in Arkansas since 2010 and a place where he went 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA a season ago. Against him was left hander Andrew Taylor who came in with a record of 0-3 with an 11.29 ERA versus the Cardinals.
After two scoreless innings, the Cardinals took advantage of some defensive miscues by the Travelers in the 3rd inning. Ryan Jackson led off with a walk and after back to back one out singles from Aaron Luna and Zack Cox loaded the bases, Charlie Cutler reached on an error scoring the first run of the game. Jermaine Curtis followed with an RBI single making it 2-0. Daryl Jones then grounded to first base allowing a run to score, but Roberto Lopez' throw to second base in an attempt to get a double play sailed into left field scoring Cutler from second giving Springfield a 4-0 lead.
Nick Additon would not allow a run in the game until the 5th when Angel Castillo reached second base on a throwing error from Zack Cox and scored on a dropped fly ball with two outs by Aaron Luna in right field bringing the Travs within three runs, 4-1.
Springfield added a run in the 6th with getting a hit as Mike Piazza walked two, allowed a runner to reach on an error and threw a wild pitch scoring Jim Rapoport from third to put the Redbirds in front 5-1.
In the 6th, Jermaine Curtis dropped a routine pop-up on the infield before Gabe Jacobo singled to center bringing the score to 5-2, but Additon buckled down to retire the next three batters in order to keep Springfield ahead 5-2. Additon finished his night throwing six strong innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on two hits while striking out five.
Nick Greenwood tossed a scoreless 7th before Jorge Rondon allowed two more runs out of the bullpen in the 8th. With one out, Gabe Jacobo doubled then scored on an RBI triple to center off the bat of Matt Cusick to make it 5-3. Orlando Mercado followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to bring the Travs within a run, 5-4.
The Cardinals offense did not have a hit after the 3rd inning, but still maintained a one run lead for David Kopp in the 9th. With one out, pinch-hitter Darwin Perez doubled down the right field line and Mike Trout followed with an infield single to third putting runners at first and second with only one out. After Chris Pettit grounded to first moving runners to second and third including the winning run at second base, Roberto Lopez grounded a ball to the hole between short and third where Ryan Jackson back-handed the ball, spun and fired to first just in time to get Lopez to end the game with the Cardinals in front 5-4.
Springfield will continue their three-game series with the Arkansas Travelers Wednesday night. The Cardinals will send right hander Michael Blazek to the mound against righty Matt Shoemaker of the Travs at 7:10pm.
The Cardinals will return to Hammons Field Wednesday August 10th for a six game homestand beginning with the San Antonio Missions at 7:07pm. Great tickets are still available by visiting the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at springfieldcardinals.com or by calling (417) 863-2143.
