Springfield Cardinals News Release

Tulsa, OK - With a 2-1 series lead after the Cardinals victory on Sunday night, Springfield had a chance to win the series against Tulsa Monday afternoon prior to the three-day All-Star Break.

The Redbirds sent 20-year-old prospect Carlos Martinez to the hill against Tulsa native Parker Frazier for the Drillers.

In the top of the first, the Cardinals plated four runs before they even recorded an out. Kolten Wong and Jermaine Curtis started the frame with singles before Chris Swauger drove home Wong with a double and Jamie Romak blasted a three-run homer to make it 4-0.

The score stayed 4-0 until the bottom of the 5th against Martinez who had allowed just two hits in his first four innings of work. In the 5th, Martinez allowed a lead-off single to Jose Gonzalez and he moved to second on a misplay in right field. After a ground out, Angelys Nina singled to center to make it a 4-1 game. Martinez allowed another man to reach before getting out of the inning. Martinez was finished after the 5th allowing just the run on four hits with five strikeouts.

Springfield would add a run to their tally in the 7th as they loaded the bases with two outs and Greg Garcia drew a walk to force in the 5th run of the game.

Kevin Thomas threw two perfect innings and Michael Blazek tossed two scoreless innings allowing just a hit while striking out three to finish off the Cardinals' 5-1 win and series victory over the Drillers.

The Cardinals will return home Friday, June 29th after the All-Star break to host the Frisco RoughRiders in a three game series. Every Friday is a Fireworks Friday thanks to AM Pyrotechnics.
