Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - With the series tied 1-1, the Springfield Cardinals sent left hander Ryan Kulik to the mound against 20-year-old prospect John Lamb of the Naturals.
The Naturals did not waste any time in getting on the scoreboard on Thursday night as Ryan Kulik got the first out of the inning, but then surrendered singles to Johnny Giavotella and Jose Fields before Clint Robinson tripled down the right field line to put the Naturals up 2-0. Nick Van Stratten followed with an RBI infield single to make it a 3-0 lead.
NW Arkansas added to their lead in the 3rd as Josh Fields singled and Clint Robinson blasted a two-run homer to center to put the Naturals in front by five runs, 5-0.
Ryan Kulik would last just four innings in his start allowing five runs on eight hits with only one strike out.
The Naturals wouldn't need much more offense as lefty John Lamb was outstanding against the Cardinals' offense. Over his 6.1 innings of work, Lamb did not allow a run or a hit and gave way to Rowdy Hardy out of the bullpen in the 7th inning after allowing a walk to Aaron Luna. Hardy was able to get the final two outs in the 7th to keep it at a 5-0 game and keep the no-hitter in tact.
Trey Hearne pitched well out of the Cardinals' bullpen throwing three scoreless innings. Scott Gorgen made his first appearance since May 19th and allowed a solo home run to Clint Robinson to lead off the 8th inning to make the score 6-0. Gorgen would retire the next three batters in order to end the inning. Adam Reifer would throw a scoreless 9th.
Down by six runs in the bottom of the 9th and still with out a hit, the Cardinals were down to their final strike against Rowdy Hardy before Andrew Brown launched a 3-2, two out home run over the bullpen in left field to break up the no-hitter and the shut out. The Cardinals would then get back to back singles from Aaron Luna and Xavier Scruggs before pinch-hitter Jermaine Curtis grounded out ending the game with a 6-1 Springfield loss.
The Cardinals are just three games back of the North Division lead with their loss against NW Arkansas. Should the Naturals win the second half, Springfield holds an 8.5 game lead over Tulsa for the next best record in the North Division playoff race.
Springfield will conclude their four game series with NW Arkansas Friday night. The Cardinals will send right hander Scott McGregor (5-4) to the mound against left hander Everett Teaford (12-3) for the Naturals. Game time is at 7:10pm at Hammons Field.
Friday night will feature a special AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks display as the Springfield Symphony Orchestra will be playing along with the fireworks! And, just before the start of the school year, the Cardinals will be giving 1,000 copies of the book Cardinal Fever presented by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. This instant classic is a tribute to all Cardinals fans and even includes a foreword by Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog.
