Tulsa Drillers News Release

At this time of the year the Tulsa Drillers will take any kind of victory they can get. It was not pretty as the Drillers committed three errors and allowed three unearned runs, but they were able to fight through their mistakes and defeat the Arkansas Travelers 7-5 Thursday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. The Tulsa offense rattled off fifteen hits and plated four unearned runs of their own to make up for their defensive mishaps.

With the victory the Drillers moved back into a second place tie with the Springfield Cardinals, and remain three games behind the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in the Texas League North Division pennant race. The Naturals also won Thursday night as they defeated the Cardinals 6-1 in Springfield.

The Travelers jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit. Andrew Romine drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a pickoff throwing error by Tulsa starting pitcher Keith Weiser. Efren Navarro followed with a groundout that plated Romine for Arkansas first run of the game.

Tulsa took advantage of a costly Travelers error in the second to take the lead. With one out, Mike Mitchell tripled to the right-centerfield gap and scored on a single by Warren Schaeffer. Matt Repec then hit a grounder to third baseman Ryan Mount who could not corral the ball. The error allowed Repec to reach safely and Schaeffer to advance to second. Radames Nazario then drew a walk to load the bases before Charlie Blackmon plated Repec and Schaeffer with a double down the leftfield line. Jordan Pacheco followed with a bases-clearing double that put the Drillers up 5-1.

The Travelers fought right back in the second when back-to-back singles Jeremy Moore and Roberto Lopez put runners on the corners. Weiser then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Moore to race home and Lopez to move to second. Beau Brooks' base hit allowed Lopez to score and pulled the Travs closer at 5-3.

The Drillers added single runs in the third and fourth to push their lead to 7-3. Anthony Jackson's base hit in the third scored Schaeffer, and in the fourth Pacheco came home on a sacrifice fly by Scott Beerer.

Arkansas battled for two more runs in the fourth thanks to a pair of Tulsa errors. Moore reached on an error by second baseman Jackson and moved to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Weiser. A double by Lopez plated Moore, before a single by Abel Nieves scored Lopez to cut the Drillers lead to 7-5.

Tulsa relievers Alberto Alburquerque and Adam Jorgenson combined to work 2 2/3 scoreless innings, while closer Stu Pomeranz threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his 16th save of the season.

Drillers' starter Weiser allowed five runs, three earned, over 5 1/3 innings to pick up his ninth win of the year.

Pacheco lead the Tulsa offense with four base hits and two runs driven in. Beerer and Nazario each added a pair of hits while every Driller batter recorded a base hit.

The Drillers will conclude their series with the Travelers Friday night. Greg Reynolds (6-4, 5.40 ERA) is schedule to start for Tulsa against Arkansas' Tyler Chatwood (4-5, 3.55 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10PM at Dickey-Stephens Park.
