Captains Split Doubleheader, Davenport Goes All Seven in Game One
September 4, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Lake County Captains News Release
(MIDLAND, MI) - The Lake County Captains (73-51) and Great Lakes Loons (75-51) both took a game, Lake County won game one 4-0 and Great Lakes were victorious in game two 3-2 on a windy and overcast Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.
The Captains received a complete game shutout from Aaron Davenport in game one, while the Loons got a walk-off solo blast from Austin Gauthier in game two.
Game One
In the first two innings, Lake County tacked on four runs. All the runners that scored reach base, on walks. Milan Tolentino and Joe Naranjo both reached via base on balls in the first and were plated after an infield single to third from Petey Halpin where an errant throw towards first helped score both men.
In the second, three consecutive walks from Mike Amditis, Tolentino, and Naranjo loaded the bases. Alexfri Planez with two outs and an 0-2 count laced a ball into centerfield for a two-run single. Planez is now 5-for-9 with two grand slams and 15 RBI with the bases loaded this season.
Aaron Davenport turned in the second complete game shutout of 2022, with Rodney Boone achieving the other in game one of a doubleheader versus Lansing on July 2nd. Davenport over seven shutout innings, allowed no walks and struck out seven. Only two runners reached scoring position and Great Lakes managed just three hits. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, 56 strikes.
Game Two
The Loons drew first blood in the backend of the twin bill. After being held scoreless by Jack Leftwich in the first two frames a single and an error put runners on the corners for Eddys Leonard to take advantage of. He rifled a ball down the third base line for a two-run double.
Cesar Idrogo with one swing knotted up the score. In the fourth, with a runner on, he drilled a ball over the right-center field wall to make it 2-2. It was his first homer with Lake County.
In relief, Alaska Abney worked two perfect innings and Davis Sharpe punched out two in a scoreless sixth. Great Lakes starter Kendall Williams completed his fifth inning 1-2-3. In the sixth, despite a leadoff single from Korey Holland, Ben Harris downed three consecutive Captains.
In the top of the seventh, Milan Tolentino singled with two outs and Joe Naranjo walked for the fourth time on the day, second in the game. But a flyout to right, ended the effort and stranded two on.
Austin Gauthier led off the bottom of the seventh against newly entered Jaime Arias. On a 2-0 pitch Gauthier skied a ball just over the right field fence. His first home run of 2022.
The Midwest League will have Labor Day off. Lake County returns home to begin their final regular season home series, hosting the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Tuesday September 6th will see first pitch at 6:05 p.m. It will be the final Buck Night presented by The Ohio Lottery. Fans can purchase $1 Five Star brand hot dogs, 12-ounce fountain drinks and 12-ounce domestic draft beer.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
