Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Captains centerfielder Johnny Drennen was 4-4 with four singles Thursday night, but the Captains were held to one, unearned run in a 7-1 loss to the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Classic Park.
The loss snapped the Captains' five-game winning streak, and dropped the Captains to four-games behind the first-place Lakewood BlueClaws, who beat West Virginia 7-1 for their sixth consecutive victory.
Chris Volstad worked five innings for the Grasshoppers Thursday, giving up only an unearned run in the third inning when Juan Valdes reached on a two-out error, stole second and scored on a single by Chris De La Cruz.
Volstad (9-7) won his fourth straight games and is now second in the SAL in wins. He did not issue a walk.
The Grasshoppers (10-11) got three consecutive hits to lead off the game against Frank Herrmann (2-4). Andy Jenkins had an RBI single and Kris Harvey drove in another run with a groundout.
Harvey and Jenkins have combined for 103 RBI on the season.
Greensboro knocked Herrmann from the game in the sixth with three more runs on five consecutive singles with two out. Brett Hayes, Jonathan Fulton and Paul Witt all had RBI's.
The Captains (12-9) threatened against the Greensboro bullpen in the eighth, loading the bases against Mauro Zarate, but Niuman Romero bounced out to end the threat.
Captains outfielder Johnny Drennen was 4-4 in the game, extending his hitting streak to 11 straight games. He raised his average to .332. The league's top hitter entering Thursday's games was Reegie Corona of Charleston, who was hitting .333.
The teams will complete the series on Friday night at 7:05 with Albert Vargas facing Greensboro's Sean West.
After the series with Greensboro, Hagerstwon will visit for a four-game set beginning Saturday night at 7:05. The first 2000 fans on Saturday will receive a collectible mini-bobblehead of former Captains first baseman Ryan Mulhern. For tickets call (440) 954-WINS.
