Captains Fry Catfish 11-8 in Ten Innings

(Columbus, GA) - Mark Thompson hit a bases clearing triple and Juan Valdes added a two run double as the Lake County Captains scored five runs in the tenth inning on their way to a 11-8 win over the Columbus Catfish on Monday. Matt Brown and Chris Nash each had three hits.

The Captains got to Catfish starter Alex Cobb in the second inning scoring two runs when Ron Rivas bounced into a double play scoring a run and Adam White had a RBI single and it was 2-0 Captains. It went to 3-0 when Cobb balked in a run in the top of the fourth inning. The Catfish got on the board in the fifth inning when Case Fontaine doubled off of Captains starter Ryan Miller and then scored on a double by Shawn O'Malley and it was 3-1.

The Catfish drew closer in the seventh when Reid Fronk hit a sacrifice fly off of Captains reliever John Gaub. Gary Campfield relieved Gaub with two outs in the inning and he gave up an RBI single to Quinn Stewart and it was 4-3. The Captains plated two runs in the eighth inning when Chris Nash singled home a run against reliever Jose Mejias and White picked up his second RBI on a single off of John Baird to extend the lead to 6-3.

The Catfish tied it up in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Captains committed two errors and the Fish got RBI's from O'Malley and Greg Sexton. Sexton added a two run home run in the tenth inning off of Garret Rieck and he now has 74 RBI's on the year.

Miller went five innings allowing one run on six hits, walking one and striking out one, snapping a seven game losing streak, to up his record to 8-7. Gaub went two innings and allowed the two runs. Campfield threw 1.2 innings and allowed three unearned runs. Josh Judy pitched 1.1 innings and picked up his league tying high 12th. John Baird gave up the five runs in the tenth inning to see his record fall to 1-2.

The Captains and Columbus play game two of the four game series on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The Captains will send RHP Joey Mahalic (6-4, 3.62) to the mound to face Catfish LHP Brian Flores (7-5, 4.15). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

The Captains will return home on Wednesday, August 20th to wrap up the regular season portion of the home schedule. The Captains will host the SAL Playoffs beginning on September 5th.

Tickets for the Playoffs remain the same as regular season game tickets, $9 reserved seat, $7 bleachers, juniors, and seniors, $6 lawn. Lawn seats for the Playoffs will only be sold once the reserved seats and bleachers are sold out. The $7 group rate will still apply to groups of 20 or more.
