Lake County Captains News Release
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (55-45) seal the last game of the series against the Great Lakes Loons (60-42) with an 11-8 win on a cloudy Sunday night at Classic Park.
The scoring started in the second inning when Gabriel Rodriguez launched a ball far over the left field bleachers and gave the Captains a 1-0 lead. The home run was Rodriguez's ninth of the year.
Following a pair of Captains errors in the fourth, Damon Keith and Imanol Vargas punched a pair of RBI singles to give the Loons a 2-1 advantage. Both of those runs would go unearned to starter Tommy Mace.
Petey Halpin would quickly respond in the home half of the inning when he extended his on-base streak to 28 with an RBI triple to score Johnathan Rodriguez, who reached base with a single.
The Loons' offense exploded with a five-run fifth inning that was capped with a bases-clearing double by Imanol Vargas to put the Loons up 7-2.
Lake County home runs kept coming in the bottom of the inning when Milan Tolentino hit a towering 3-run homer into right field to bring the Captains within two.
After the Loons extended the lead to 8-5 on an error, Lake County would put runs on the board for the third straight inning in the sixth. With two runners on, Mike Amditis hit an RBI single. That single was immediately followed by a Korey Holland three-run blast that pushed the Captains in front 9-8.
Raymond Burgos went 1.1 innings and only allowed an unearned run on one hit when he was relieved in the seventh inning by Davis Sharpe. The 2021 13th Round Pick retired all six batters he faced and recorded two strikeouts.
The Captain's offense would cap off the scoring with Connor Kokx curling a two-run homer around the left field foul pole to put Lake County ahead 11-8.
Zach Hart would lock things down in the ninth, only surrendering one hit before recording the save.
The Captains begin a six-game series when they take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps starting Tuesday night, August 9, with the first pitch at 6:35 pm. Captains will don the Picantes de Lake County persona on Tuesday.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
