Colorado Rapids News Release
Commerce City, CO (Tuesday, July 10, 2007)- The Colorado Rapids' team captain Pablo Mastroeni today was named to the MLS All-Star team for the sixth consecutive year by All-Star coach Steve Nicol.
The MLS All-Stars take on Celtic FC in Mastroeni's home stadium, Dick's Sporting Goods Park, next Thursday, July 19 at 7 p.m.
After joining the Rapids in 2002, Mastroeni has not failed to be named as an All-Star. In that time, he has also represented his country twice in the World Cup (with the USA in 2002 and 2006). This year he was on the US squad that captured the Gold Cup and qualified for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Mastroeni has established himself as one of the squad's most renowned and respected players both on and off the field, and both at a national and international level. Mastroeni was named the Rapids' team captain on Sept. 23, 2004 and has lived up to that responsibility ever since.
Equally talented as both a central defender and holding midfielder, Mastroeni has the ability to single-handedly break up an opposition's attack with his pace and strength in tackle. He is also one of the league's best at starting an attack after winning the ball thanks to his incredible work rate. He is undoubtedly one of the Rapids' most vocal leaders both on and off the field.
Earlier this year he was named one of the top 50 Latino Athletes by Hispanic Magazine and just last week made an appearance on "Emeril Live!", the show of his cooking idol.
