Madison Capitols News Release

The Madison Capitols bury a pair of goals 1:50 apart in the final five minutes of regulation to comeback and defeat the Youngstown Phantoms 3-2 to take a 1-0 series lead in the first round of the Clark Cup Playoffs.

Madison found themselves trailing for the first time in the game when Youngstown scored on a rebound out front with 5:31 left in regulation to take a 2-1 lead. 47 seconds later, Capitols captain Jack Horbach equalized the game when he corralled a cross-ice pass from blueliner Blake Dangos and fired it home far side to beat Phantoms netminder Jacob Fowler.

With time winding down in the final 20 minutes of regulation, the Caps did a fantastic job of extending the play and holding the offensive zone to make the Phantoms pay. Forward Nick DeSantis grabbed a loose puck after holding the zone, walked it into the middle, spun around and reversed the ice to find line mate Jack Musa back door. The Boston University commit then put a move on and walked out front to bury into a wide open net. Horbach tallied his second point of the night with the secondary assist.

"We did a good job of sticking to our game plan. We battled some adversity and got rewarded in the end. Job isn't done yet," Capitols head coach Tommy Upton said.

Madison netted their first goal 15:06 into the 1st period to go up 1-0 when forward Tyler Haskins grabbed a misplayed puck by Fowler behind the net put it into the goaltender-less cage.

Caps netminder Simon Latkoczy earned his third consecutive victory tonight stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced. Latkoczy now has eight postseason victories under his belt.

The Caps move one step closer to the Eastern Conference semifinals with tonight's victory. They can get there with a win tomorrow night in Game 2. Puck drop slated for 7:05 p.m. ET.
