Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols announced their 23-man roster to begin the 2015-16 USHL season on Tuesday, which included the acquisition of a pair of players from the Waterloo Black Hawks earlier in the day.
The Capitols acquired forward Tyson McClellan (San Jose, Calif.) and defenseman Phil Beaulieu (Duluth, Minn.) in exchange for defenseman Tony Stillwell and future draft picks.
McClellan, 19, skated in 40 games with the Black Hawks in 2014-15, producing six goals and six assists on the campaign. He is the son of current Edmonton Oilers head coach and former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McClellan. He is a University of Connecticut commit.
Beaulieu, 20, was a stalwart on the Waterloo blue line in 2014-15, scoring 10 goals and adding 19 assists while playing in all 60 regular season games. He was tied for 9th among USHL defensemen in terms of point production. He is committed to playing NCAA hockey for the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Other notables to earn a space on the Capitols' opening night roster include forward Eetu Selanne (Coto De Caza, Calif.). A Capitols' USHL Phase II draft selection in 2014, Selanne is the son of longtime Anaheim Ducks superstar Teemu Selanne, who captured a Stanley Cup & four Olympic medals with Finland while scoring 1,457 points in the NHL over 21 seasons.
In total, the Capitols 2015-16 roster features eight Wisconsin natives: forwards Alec Broetzman (Hudson), Sam McCormick (De Pere), Luke McElhenie (Sauk City), and Charlie Parker (Verona); as well as defenseman Robby Fosdick (Brookfield), Cole Hults (Stoughton), and brothers Cooper and Carver Watson (Appleton).
Also named to the Capitols' 23-man opening night roster was forward Garrett Klee (Morrison, Colo.), the son of Ken Klee, who played 934 NHL games on defense for seven clubs, the most of which took place with the Washington Capitals.
The Capitols will be backstopped by 2015 Anaheim Ducks sixth-round selection Garrett Metcalf (Salt Lake City, Utah), who won 10 games for Madison in its inaugural season. Joining Metcalf between the pipes is Ryan Edquist (Lakeville, Minn.), who captured a Minnesota state championship with Lakeville North High School, a club that did not lose a single game in 2014-15.
