Capitols Can't Hold Early Lead, Fall to Thunder
December 13, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI- The Madison Capitols (10-8-4) took the first period lead on home ice, but the Bloomington Thunder (11-11-3) rallied to score four of the game's final five goals to win, 4-2, at the Alliant Energy Center on Saturday.
The Capitols wasted little time in the opening frame to start the barrage of teddy bears on the first annual Teddy Bear Toss night at the Alliant Energy Center. After being handed the game's first power play, Daniel Willett patiently waited and flung the puck through traffic, beating Thunder goalie Logan Halladay at 8:36 to put Madison up 1-0. It was the fourth of the season for the defenseman.
The lead would not make it through the whole period, though, as Bloomington tied it up on a power play of its own at the 14:51 mark courtesy of Van Barr.
Both teams both turned up the physicality in the middle frame, as a pair of fights upped the game's animosity level, as Robby Fosdick tangled with Blake Gober, while Jarod Zirbel threw the mitts down with Logan Lambdin.
As the game's mean streak picked up, Bloomington harnessed the momentum into yet another special teams goal, this one shorthanded. Ryan Galt picked up the marker, roofing a perfect shot over the blocker of Garrett Metcalf at 7:46.
Madison had a pair of chances to tie the score on power plays, but Halladay and the Bloomington kill were successful in preserving the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
As the Capitols valiantly tried to get the game's equalizer, a stroke of bad luck haunted Madison in the third, as Jack Jenkins threw a puck on goal from the left post. Metcalf made the save, but the rebound caromed off of a Capitol defender and into the goal. With the goal at 7:21, Bloomington extended its lead to 3-1.
The Madison power play again had opportunities in the third, but could not strike. Freddy Gerard found the scoresheet on a rebound at 19:36, but it was too little, too late for the Capitols. Gober hit an empty Capitols net in the game's dying seconds to round out the 4-2 final score.
The Capitols take to the road on Thursday to face the USHL's top team, Cedar Rapids, at 7 p.m., before the two teams reconvene on Friday, Dec. 19 at the Coliseum at 7 p.m. for a Dollar Beer Night. College students can present ID's and receive $10 tickets at the box office on Friday.
Kids will be admitted to all Madison Capitols home games free of charge (with the purchase of an adult ticket) in the month of December (Dec. 19, 29-30) in conjunction with UW Health Sports Medicine.
