Bloomington Thunder News Release

Madison, WI - The Bloomington Thunder closed out the first half of the season before winter break with a win over the other United States Hockey League expansion franchise, the Madison Capitols, by the final score of 4-2. The team grabbed the win and now moves into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 11-11-3 and 25 points as they leapfrog the Chicago Steel and Madison Capitols in the standings

The Caps got the early lead in the game as Daniel Willett scored a power play goal at 8:36 of the first period. The goal snuck through screens in front of the Thunder net and made it 1-0. Bloomington would pick up the pace in the second half of the period and eventually grabbed the equalizer. On their first power play opportunity, Alec Mehr would shoot the puck on the off pad of goaltender Garrett Metcalf who gave up a juicy rebound to the Thunder's Van Barr. Barr roofed it over the netminder and made it a tie game at 14:51 of the first.

The second got physical and featured a slew of penalties including two separate fights that sidelined Blake Gober and Logan Lambdin for the remainder of the period and part of the third. However, with all the penalties, the Thunder were able to score a short-handed goal courtesy of Ryan Gale (University of Nebraska-Omaha). Galt potted the goal at 7:46 of the second and made it a 2-1 game with his sixth of the season and first in 17 games after scoring five in the month of October.

In the third the Thunder were able to rely on some timely saves by Logan Halladay (University of Minnesota) who finished the game with 26 saves and the win. Then Jack Jenkins proved why you throw pucks to the net as it bounced off the defenseman in front of Metcalf and made it a 3-1 game. Later in the period, the Caps were in desperation mode and pulled Metcalf for an attacker and got a goal with under 30 seconds to play, bringing themselves within one. Bloomington got a late empty netter from Gober to avoid a nail biter and walked away with the 4-2 win.

The Thunder finished the game 1-4 on the power play and grabbed a short-hander in the game while denying four of five opportunities for the Capitols. The Thunder now have wins in six of their last seven heading into the winter break with a .500 record.
