
Capitals Unveil Uniform for 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals unveiled their uniform for the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter ClassicR today at Nationals Park. Modeled by captain Alex Ovechkin, alternate captain Nicklas Backstrom and goaltender Braden Holtby, the uniform system is a tribute to the franchise's past and the history of Washington professional hockey.
"We wanted to create a uniform that not only celebrates the history of the Capitals but also gives the team a unique, new look," said Capitals president Dick Patrick. "We feel our fans will really embrace this uniform."
"Each year, the NHL Winter ClassicR uniform system is designed to pay homage to hockey's outdoor roots," said NHL Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President Brian Jennings. "We are extremely proud of the collaboration by Reebok, the CapitalsR and the NHL to creatively balance Washington's hockey past with today's innovations."
The 2015 Capitals NHL Winter Classic jersey includes many elements from Capitals jerseys worn during the past five decades. The "Capitals" wordmark on the front of the jersey has been a hallmark of Caps jerseys throughout the past four decades, even through several redesigns. The stars on the front are also an element seen on many Capitals jerseys through the years, including the Capitals current jersey.
The primary color for the Capitals' NHL Winter Classic uniform is vintage deep red to symbolize hockey's deep roots in Washington. The stripes on the shoulders, waist and legs bring in elements of Washington professional hockey jerseys from the 1930's, predating the Capitals' formation in the 1970s. A large "W" on the front of the jersey, offset in blue to contrast the white Capitals wordmark, offers a unique look never seen before on Capitals jerseys. Capitals NHL Winter Classic jerseys will be available for sale to the public in mid-November, but fans will be able to pre-order the jerseys on MonumentalNetworkShop.com beginning on Oct. 3. Shop.NHL.com, the official online store of the NHL operated by e-commerce provider Fanatics, will take pre-orders for Capitals NHL Winter Classic jerseys starting today. Other NHL Winter Classic apparel will be available at the Verizon Center Team Store during the final preseason game on Oct. 5 and at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the official practice facility of the Capitals, with expanded selections coming in through the fall.
The 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will take place New Year's Day at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., and will be televised by NBC beginning at 1 p.m. The 2015 game will mark the seventh NHL Winter Classic, an annual game that Forbes magazine called the best new sporting event of the last decade. It will mark the second time in history the Capitals will play an outdoor game; Washington defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in front of 68,111 fans at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Jan. 1, 2011.
