Capitals Re-Sign Center Brooks Laich

The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Brooks Laich, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Brooks has excellent size and speed," said McPhee. "We look forward to him developing into an offensive threat this year."

Laich, 23, played in each of the 73 games for the Capitals since his initial recall from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Oct. 25, 2005. He ranked 11th among Capitals players with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists). Laich was also second among Capitals rookies in scoring and tied for 47th among NHL rookies in 2005-06.

Laich was a member of the 2006 Calder Cup championship Bears team, ranking tied for fifth among Bears players and tied for 15th in the AHL in playoff scoring with 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 21 games. He also scored 13 points in 10 regular season games with Hershey this season (seven goals, six assists).

The 6'2", 208-pound native of Wawota, Saskatchewan, was Ottawa's sixth-round choice, 193rd overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft. The Capitals acquired Laich from Ottawa, Feb. 18, 2004.
