Capitales Silence Champions Bats with Series-Opening Win

OTTAWA - The Quebec Capitales relied on solid pitching to shut down the Ottawa Champions on Monday night and take the first game of a three-game set 4-1.

"We're going through hard times right now," said manager Hal Lanier following his team's seventh straight loss. "We're not doing a lot of things in a lot of areas. Giving up too many runs with two outs and giving up some runs on defence."

LHP Jay Johnson was dominant, surrendering only five hits and no walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings.

The Champions lone run came in the seventh inning off LHP Will Dennis. LF Coco Johnson reached on a double and was brought home from third when 2B Steve Nyisztor hit a two-bagger of his own.

After the run, the Capitales brought in RHP Trevor Bayless, who held the Champions to one hit over 2.1 innings to notch the save.

CF Chase Harris pulled a bunt single out of nowhere to start the ballgame. Harris has been settling in to the leadoff spot nicely and has now reached base in his first at-bat of three consecutive ballgames.

SS Daniel Bick was in fine form with a pair of doubles, while Coco Johnson recorded his first multi-hit game since July 7.

RHP Jake Hale got the start for Ottawa on the same day in which he was activated from the disabled list. Hale gave the Champions six innings of three-run ball. However, he did give up ten hits and had to work out of a couple of jams.

"I thought Jake pitched pretty well without having his best stuff," said Lanier. "The layoff probably hurt him, but he only gave up a few hard hits."

RHP Ryan Leach and RHP Danny Carela each gave up a run in the eighth and ninth, while LHP Scott Maine finished the game for Ottawa.
