Capitales Score Seven Runs in the First Inning to Cruise Past Champions 11-6

OTTAWA - Joe Lytle went 4-for-5 with three RBI and the Québec Capitales scored seven runs in the first inning to cruise past the Ottawa Champions 11-6 on Wednesday.

Starting pitcher Jordan Kurokawa allowed seven earned runs on seven hits over just 2/3 of an inning before Heath Bowers came into the game. Bowers struck out nine over 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.

Champions manager Sébastien Boucher said that a rough start didn't help Kurokawa but also that he didn't get much defensive help.

"He just didn't have his stuff," said Boucher. "He didn't have the velocity that he normally does and that's always a big factor. He's not a big power arm to begin with, he's more of a finesse guy and when you don't have your velo(city) or command, it's kind of a double effect that snowballs."

"We didn't make any plays behind him to help him out," continued Boucher. "If our guys come up with one or two plays there I think he gets out of that inning with maybe one run."

Ottawa scored three runs over the final two innings to try and put together a comeback but Maikol Gonzalez grounded out to third with a runner on to end the game.

"(The game) is already behind us," said Boucher on whether the blowout was a hit to the team's confidence. "It's that kind of game. We're still confident in what we can do. We still showed that we can score and we still showed that we can win these ball games."

Andy Mocahbee put the Champions on the board in the second with an RBI double deep to left that scored Steve Brown. Neither team would score another run until Ottawa scored two runs in the sixth to make it 7-3.

Québec blew the game open before it even started, scoring seven runs in the top of the first before the Champions even got to the plate. Six of the Capitales batters had at least one RBI in the inning with Joe Lytle driving in two.

One bright spot for the Champions was Eduard Pinto, who went 4-for-5 with an RBI.

"That's what he does, he gets good at-bats" said Boucher. "I like that our guys were still able to get good at-bats and still kind of chip away. The game got a little out of hand at the end but we never really stay out of it."

The Champions close out the series against the Capitales tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at RCGT Park.
