Little Falls, N.J. - After falling behind 4-0 early, the New Jersey Jackals moved the tying run into scoring position in the ninth inning, but the Quebec Capitales held on for a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Can-Am League Championship Series.

For the second straight night, the Capitales plated all of their runs in one inning as they pushed four runs across in the third to open the scoring. After Patrick D'Aoust led off with a single, Goefrey Tomlinson stroked a one-out RBI double to get Quebec on the board. Two batters later, Sebastien Boucher singled home Tomlinson with two outs to make it 2-0. Jackals' starter A.J. Wideman then threw behind Boucher at first, but the Quebec right fielder was able to steal second, avoiding the pickoff and extending the inning. The next batter, Rene Leveret, lifted a two-run homer just over the 368-foot marker in right center to give the Capitales a 4-0 advantage.

The Jackals finally threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases on three consecutive one-out singles before breaking through on an RBI fielders' choice off the bat of Sandy Madera to make it a 4-1 contest.

In the seventh, Quebec starter John Mariotti walked Kris Sanchez on four pitches. Mariotti retired the next two batters he faced before a Chris White RBI single plated Sanchez to cut the Jackals' deficit to 4-2.

New Jersey pulled within one in the eighth inning when Bryan Sabatella lined a leadoff triple past a diving Tomlinson in center field and scored when Josh Colafemina's relay to third base bounced into the Jackals' dugout to make it a 4-3 game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Mike DeJesus drew a two-out walk after working the count full to put the tying run aboard. Mike Richard pinch ran and promptly stole second, but Quebec closer T.J. Stanton induced Chris White to fly out to deep center field to end the game.

Mariotti surrendered two runs on six hits in six innings to notch the victory. Wideman suffered his first loss since June 20, snapping a string of eight consecutive victorious outing after allowing four runs on six hits over six frames. Stanton notched the save for the second consecutive day.

The Jackals' bullpen once again kept New Jersey within striking distance as Kyle Gunderson turned in 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Jeff Gogal retired all five batters he faced. In the postseason, the Jackals' relief corps has contributed 14 1/3 scoreless frames.

Sabatella and Myron Leslie each finished with two hits for the Jackals while Tomlinson went 2-for-4 for Quebec.

The Can-Am League Championship Series now shifts north of the border for game three on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Stade Municipal in Quebec City when New Jersey sends southpaw Jon Kibler (3-6, 6.03 ERA) to the mound against right-hander Karl Gelinas (8-6, 3.49 ERA). Kibler allowed just one run over six innings in his first playoff start this season on Saturday against Pittsfield while Gelinas has fired 24 consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason the past two years. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live audio webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 playoff tickets are available by calling 973-746-7434.
