Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Wednesday night, 112-101, to win their second-straight home game at the Memorial Civic Center. The victory improved Canton's record to 3-5 overall on the season, while Fort Wayne fell to 2-6. The season series is now even at one win apiece, with each squad defending their home court.
Canton dug themselves into a deep hole in the first half as they trailed by as many as 13, surrendered 10 turnovers and committed 16 fouls that saw Fort Wayne make 26 visits to the free-throw line. The Charge's offense was their saving grace in keeping them in the game, as they poured in a season-high 36 points in the second quarter on 71% shooting to ease the deficit down to 58-62 at the intermission.
With Canton trailing 69-76 midway through the third quarter, the home team awoke on both ends of the floor by going on a 22-7 run over the final 5:55 and locking down the Mad Ants for just 39% shooting in the period. That eight-point cushion would be all the Charge needed as they were able to hold off the visitors the rest of the way. Canton shot a season-best 60% from the field overall in the contest and dished out a season-high 25 assists.
Jon Leuer had his second double-double in as many games with 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting, 10 rebounds, three assists and a steal in 39 minutes. Arinze Onuaku also tallied a double-double, his fourth this season, with his 14 points and 10 rebounds in 17 minutes. Canton outrebounded Fort Wayne 41-29 and has outrebounded their opponents in every game this season. Kyle Gibson scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 25 minutes. Dominique Johnson came off the bench to provide 12 points, five assists and two steals in 27 minutes.
The Mad Ants were led by Ron Howard's 23 points, four rebounds, six assists and five steals in 44 minutes. Mike Anderson notched a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds with two steals and a blocked shot. Tony Mitchell totaled 21 points with five rebounds and three assists in 43 minutes. All five Mad Ants starters scored in double figures and each of the starting five played at least 34 minutes.
The Charge will stay in the friendly confines of the Civic Center for a pair of back-to-back home games this weekend, starting with a matchup against the Springfield Armor on Friday, December 14th at 7:30 p.m. against the Springfield Armor.
