
Canseco Forced to Pitch as WhiteWings Blow Away Broncos

HARLINGEN - Jose Canseco was the only pitcher to hold the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings without a run, as they scored in each of the first seven innings while holding Canseco 1-for-4 with a double and two strikeouts in a 17-4 win over the Laredo Broncos on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.
Canseco allowed a single to Leivi Ventura while striking out Brian Nichols, and inducing a groundout and a lineout while throwing knuckleballs. It was Canseco's third career professional pitching appearance and his first since 2006.
The WhiteWings' (44-42) lead over the San Angelo Colts for the fourth and final playoff spot is now three games and the WhiteWings magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to four. The WhiteWings are now winners of a franchise-record tying six-straight games.
Canseco returns to Harlingen Field as the WhiteWings face the Broncos at Harlingen Field on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Tickets range from $4-to-$8 and can be purchased online at whitewingsbaseball.com, by calling the WhiteWings at 423-WING (9464) or at the Harlingen Field box office starting at 10:00 a.m. CPL Retail Energy is holding Customer Appreciation Night. Any fans purchasing their tickets at the WhiteWings box office who say they were sent by "CPL Retail Energy, a Direct Energy Company," will receive two free tickets to the game, courtesy of CPL Energy.
The Broncos (44-41) struck against Misael DeJesus (8-5) in the top of the first. Jason Diaz led off the game with an infield-single and moved to second on a wild throw. A sacrifice bunt moved Diaz to third, allowing him to score on a groundout by Jonel Pacheco to make it 1-0.
The WhiteWings responded against Robert Roth (2-5) in the bottom of the first. Javis Diaz led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Yeurys Tejeda. Ventura singled and a pair of wild pitched moved the runners up two bases, allowing Tejeda to score to make it 2-1.
Salvador Paniagua and Carlos Arroyo hit back-to-back home run with two outs in the top of the second to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead.
Arlon Quiroz and Eric Gonzalez led off the bottom of the second with walks on nine total pitches to knock our Roth. After a sacrifice bunt, Diaz and Luany Sanchez hit back-to-back RBI-singles against Brian Buchanan, Tejeda reached on an RBI-fielder's choice and Ventura hit an RBI-double to give the WhiteWings a 6-3 lead.
Welinson Baez led off the bottom of the third with a single, Quiroz hit an RBI-triple and Gonzalez hit an RBI-double to knock out Buchanan with the score 8-3 WhiteWings.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Quiroz walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gonzalez to make it 9-3.
Tejeda hit his 16th home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-3.
Sanchez hit a three-run home run, his 15th of the season, and Ventura hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 15-3.
The WhiteWings put runners at second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. Roberto Rodriguez hit an RBI-groundout and Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to make it 17-3.
The Broncos loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the ninth, but scored just one run against Tate Kelly.
