Cannon and Veras Extend Barons' Win Streak in 6-3 Victory Over Chattanooga

August 18, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons have had an inconsistent performance from starting pitchers this season. However, after a 6-3 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts where the starting pitcher was assigned the win, RHP Jonathan Cannon became the third straight starting pitcher to pitch 5.0 plus innings and be awarded the win. Cannon finished his sixth outing with the Barons with five hits, one earned run, zero walks and five strikeouts.

The right-hander was not the only player to aid the victory as Wilfred Veras finished the night as the prolific batter from the plate. Veras ended his night going 2-4 from the plate with a run, a double, an RBI and a home run.

Cannon kicked off the game with two quick strikeouts and escaped the first without giving up more than a single. The 23-year-old replicated a similar dominance for the top of the next innings, claiming four strikeouts within the first three innings and only allowed three singles.

In the bottom of the third, the Barons broke the scoreless tie by scoring two runs in the frame. Colson Montgomery with two on smacked a single to score Yoelqui Cespedes and an E9 scored Jose Rodriguez. Montgomery was only able to secure the one RBI but would make up for it later in the game.

Cannon protected the lead in the top of the fourth as the Birmingham offense added to it in the bottom with two more runs. The Barons collected their runs off a Veras homer and Tim Elko's first home run of the season. Veras with the home run extended his hit streak to six games.

The lead was not lost in the top of the fifth, but Chattanooga closed the gap by one run. Cannon allowed his only earned run of the night off a Blake Dunn triple that scored Migel Hernandez. The Barons were unable to add in the bottom of the inning but did pick up their scoring in the bottom of the seventh.

Before the Barons scored their final runs of the night, RHP Nick Gallagher relieved Cannon to kick off the sixth. In Gallagher's lone inning of work, he finished the night with zero hits, zero runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

After Gallagher's effort, the Barons then tossed out RHP Adisyn Coffey to kick off the seventh. In the top of the seventh, Coffey sat the Lookouts down in three batters. In the bottom of the inning, Birmingham collected two more runs as Montgomery singled. The Chicago White Sox No. 1 prospect smacked his second and final hit of the night to finish his RBI tally at three.

Chattanooga responded quickly in the top of the eighth with their own two run frame off a home run by Austin Callahan that scored Dunn.

Birmingham could not get much going in the top of the ninth but with a three-run lead, the bottom was what mattered most. The Barons tossed RHP Chase Plymell on the mound for the save opportunity. Plymell sat down the Lookouts in three batters with three straight fly outs to snag his first save as a Baron.

The Barons collected their third straight win and dominant Chattanooga in all three. Birmingham now turns their efforts to Game 4 on Friday as they toss RHP Matt Thompson for his 22nd start.
