Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Malquin Canelo left the yard for the fourth time this season, and Carlos Tocci finished with three hits on Wednesday, but Clearwater suffered a 5-3 loss to Brevard County in game two of the three-game set at Bright House Field.
Clearwater (36-23) remains two games back of the Dunedin Blue Jays in the FSL North, after Dunedin fell 3-0 at Tampa. Daytona knocked off Lakeland to move into second place, 1.5 games back of the Blue Jays.
The Manatees (15-44) halted a 13-game losing streak with the victory.
Brevard County got on the board in the fifth inning, when Mitch Ghelfi delivered a single through the right side to score Wendell Rijo. A second run crossed on the play when Aaron Brown's throw from right got loose beyond third base, permitting Corey Ray to scamper in and make it 2-0.
Those runs snapped a streak of 28 consecutive scoreless innings hurled by Clearwater pitching.
The Threshers answered with a pair of their own in the bottom of the fifth.
Canelo singled to lead off the inning against Phil Bickford (1-0), and with two outs Tocci delivered a single to center to bring in Canelo. Chace Numata followed with a liner to right-center to score Tocci and tie the game at two.
Shane Watson would not factor in the decision after working five innings in the start. He permitted two runs - one earned - on five hits and two walks, picking up four strikeouts.
David Denson and Dustin Houle started the Manatees rally against reliever Jeff Singer (0-1) in the sixth, notching back-to-back singles. After Jose Cuas sacrificed them over, Wendell Rijo's double to left-center scored both runners to put Brevard County back up, 4-2.
Canelo lifted off against reliever Kender Villegas in the bottom of the seventh, lining his fourth home run of the season over the wall in left to cut the deficit to one.
The Manatees managed to push their lead back to two, after Ray's double brought home a run off Ranfi Casimiro in the ninth.
Clearwater will have a chance to take the series on Thursday, when Elniery Garcia (10-4) toes the rubber against Bubba Derby (6-10). First pitch is at 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com and the TuneIn app starting at 6:45 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
