Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (36-22, 72-55) used three multi-run innings to earn their third straight win, beating the Lakeland Flying Tigers (22-35, 56-69), 7-1, Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Chadwick Tromp and Shed Long each drove in a pair of runs, while Seth Varner tossed seven innings of one run ball for the second straight outing.

Daytona got on the scoreboard in the third inning against RHP Spencer Turnbull. With one out, Blake Trahan tripled to right field to score Jonathan Reynoso for the early 1-0 lead. It's the first time this year that Trahan has driven in a run in three straight games. Shed Long followed with an RBI single to center to double the Tortugas lead, 2-0.

Lakeland's lone run came on a Tyler Bortnick homer to lead off the fourth inning. It was his first in a Lakeland jersey and the first allowed by Varner in August.

In the fifth, Daytona struck for two more runs. Reydel Medina set the inning with a lead-off single before Tromp doubled him home to make it 3-1. Reynoso followed suit with an RBI single to left field to put the Tortugas up, 4-1.

Daytona wasn't finished there, as they tacked on a trio of runs in the seventh to break the game open. Tromp singled home Medina, who reached on an infield single and advanced to second on AJ Simcox's second throwing error of the night, padding the Tortugas lead, 5-1. Long lofted a sacrifice fly, while Angelo Gumbs smacked an RBI single to left field to give the game its final score, 7-1.

Varner (7-8) earned the win by allowing just an earned run in seven innings of work, while fanning five batters. Turnbull (0-1) suffered the loss, working six innings and allowing four runs, three of which were earned.

The Tortugas passed Clearwater for second place in the North Division with Wednesday's win and pull within 1.5 games of the first place Dunedin Blue Jays.

The Torutgas look for the series sweep Thursday at The Jack. RHP Tejay Antone (14-6, 3.43 ERA) gets the start for Daytona, while LHP Matt Morris ( 3-2, 4.37 ERA) gets the nod for the Flying Tigers. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM, which pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
