Canaries Swept in Double-Header

Wichita, KS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-6) suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Wichita Wingnuts (5-6), losing game one 3-2 and game two 6-0 on Thursday night in front of 7,134 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Canaries took an early game one lead with a run out of the gate. The Birds loaded the bases on singles by Joe Anthonsen and Tim Hutting followed by a base on balls for Cody Haerther. Cory Harris came up with the bases loaded and hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Anthonsen for a 1-0 lead.

Wichita tied the game in the bottom of the first. Josh Horn was hit by a pitch to reach base. After a groundout by Nick Blasi moved Horn into scoring position, Greg Porter singled to centerfield to bring home Horn and tie the game, 1-1.

The Wingnuts took the lead in the second inning. Stephen Pearson and Horn drew walks to put two men on base for Blasi. With two outs, Blasi doubled to centerfield to bring home both Pearson and Horn. Two innings into the game, Wichita led by a pair, 3-1.

The Canaries pulled within one in the third. Hutting singled and advanced to third on a base hit by Haerther. With runners on the corners, Wichita starting pitcher Derek Blacksher threw a wild pitch threw the wickets of catcher Joe Muich, allowing Hutting to score, and make it a 3-2 game.

The Birds chance to tie came in their last at-bat. Anthonsen started the seventh inning with a single, and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Hutting. Haerther followed with a single to right-field. Anthonsen attempted to score on the play, but was thrown out by Wichita right-fielder Stephen Pearson.

Ben Moore (4-6) suffered the loss in game one, pitching his third complete game of the year to tie co-league leaders Jae Jung of Fort Worth and Adam Cowart of Wichita. Derek Blacksher (6-2) got the win for Wichita, while Joe D'Alessandro picked up his fourth save of the season.

In game two, the Wingnuts drew first blood. With two outs in the second inning, Stephen Pearson walked and stole second base to get in scoring position. Mike Thompson brought him home with a single to give Wichita an early 1-0 advantage.

Wichita pulled away in a five-run fifth inning. Michael Sharp started the inning with a single. After Brenan Herrera was hit by a pitch, Horn singled to load the bases. Blasi singled to score Sharp, and an errant throw by Canaries right-fielder J.D. Reininger allowed Herrera to score for a 3-0 lead. After Dustan Mohr was intentionally walked, Pearson drew an RBI walk to make it 4-0 and Michael Thompson delivered a two-run single to cap-off the 6-0 final.

Brad Davis (5-5) pitched a complete game, two-hitter to pick up the win for Wichita. Noel Baca (2-2) suffered the game-two loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work.

The Canaries return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. for a series opener with the Sioux City Explorers. The game will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
