Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Joseph, MO - The Canaries (7-18) were swept out of Phil Welch Stadium by the St. Joe Blacksnakes (9-17) in a 5-2 loss on Thursday night. Two defensive errors for the Canaries opened the door for the Blacksnakes runs in the loss.

The Blacksnakes took an early lead in the first inning. Scooter Jordan led off with a single to extend his American Association leading consecutive game on-base streak to 25 games. Jordan advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Thomas and scored when Jake Whitesides reached on a fielding error by Canaries third baseman Chris Hall.

An error opened the door for the Blacksnakes in the home half of the second inning. With one out a throwing error on shortstop Sammy Juarez allowed Jefferson Infante to reach. Denver Kitch, Jimmy Mojica, and Scooter Jordan followed with three straight hits, including a bases clearing triple by Jordan to give St. Joe a 4-0 lead. Jordan would add a run when Ben Thomas grounded out to second base, making it 5-0.

The Canaries got on the board in the fifth. David Hoffman reached on a throwing error by third baseman Ben Thomas and Chris Hall singled to put runners on first and second base to start the inning. Blacksnakes starting pitcher Mark Nussbeck bounced back with strikeouts of the next two batters. With two outs, Canaries pitcher Peter Bauer bounced a ball to second base that was misplayed by Denver Kitch. David Hoffman scored on the play to make it 5-1. Ralph Santana followed with a single to score Chris Hall. Hall's run cut the Blacksnakes lead to 5-2.

Chris Hall did not come back out for the bottom of the fifth inning. Hall appeared to have hurt his right leg on a defensive play in the bottom of the fourth inning, but remained in the game until not returning after scoring the run in the fifth.

Mark Nussbeck (2-1) got the win for St. Joe. Peter Bauer (1-2) was saddled with the loss. J.C. Huget picked up his third save of the year.

The Canaries will now travel to St. Paul, Minnesota for a three-game weekend series with the St. Paul Saints. The team will return to the Birdcage next Tuesday when they will open a six-game homestand with a Travel Mug Giveaway presented by Old Courthouse Museum.
