St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
'Snakes Complete Second Sweep of Depleted Sioux Falls Offense strikes early and staff does not allow an earned run in win
St. Joseph, MO-The offense scored five early runs and that was more than enough for Mark Nussbeck and the Blacksnakes (9-17) to sweep the Sioux Falls Canaries (7-18), 5-2.
The offense scored a run in the first by playing "small ball." Scooter Jordan singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored when Jake Whitesides' ground ball went through the Chris Hall's legs at third base. It was 1-0 after one inning.
In the second, St. Joe put up four more on three hits and another error. With one out, Jefferson Infante reached on an error. Denver Kitch singled him to third and Jimmy Mojica's single scored Infante for a 2-0 lead. Scooter Jordan followed with a triple that scored both runners to extend the lead to 4-0. Jordan then scored on Ben Thomas' groundout.
That would be all the scoring against Peter Bauer (1-2) for Sioux Falls, but Mark Nussbeck (2-1) made it hold up. Nussbeck allowed just a pair of unearned runs in the fifth as the Canaries tried to mount a rally, but would not come any closer than the 5-2 final. J.C. Huguet closed out the ninth for his third save.
Scooter Jordan had his second three-hit game of the year, scoring twice with a pair of runs batted in. He also extended his streak of reaching safely to 25 straight ballgames to start the year.
In seven innings, Nussbeck allowed just three hits and the two unearned runs while striking out eight. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 17 2/3 innings on the hill. The entire staff has allowed just nine earned runs over their last 69 innings pitched-a 1.17 ERA.
The 'Snakes-winners of four of their last five-will host another North Division foe when Sioux City comes to town for the weekend. Friday night is UMB Fireworks Friday at Phil Welch, with game time at 7:05pm. Gates open at 6pm as Dustin Kupper (1-1) will start for the 'Snakes and J.D. Scholten (2-1) will take the hill for the Explorers to begin the three-game series. Our broadcast air time will be 6:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
