
Canaries Streak Stopped In 6-1 Loss

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-6) suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Sioux City Explorers (7-17). The loss snapped the Canaries six game winning streak.
The Explorers scored two out of the gate in the bottom of the first inning. Jason Tuttle led off with an infield single and stole second base to get into scoring position for Nick McCoola. McCoola drove in Tuttle with a single through the middle to give Sioux City a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Alex Llanos singled home McCoola to put the Explorers ahead by a pair, 2-0.
Sioux City extended their lead thanks to a Canaries error in the second inning. Dustin Jones singled and advanced to third base on a fielding error by Canaries second baseman David Keesee. A groundout by Nick McCoola drove Dustin Jones home to give the Explorers a 3-0 lead.
The Canaries got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Will Smith led off the inning by hitting his fifth home run of the season, making it 3-1, Explorers.
The Explorers put the Canaries away in the bottom of the eighth. Sioux City loaded the bases on a single by Julian Benavidez, a walk to Alex Llanos, and a sacrifice bunt by Mike Richardson where the Canaries failed to throw out Benavidez at third base. Brandon Jones hit a sacrifice fly to score Benavidez and give Sioux City a 4-1 lead. Dustin Jones followed with a single to right field that scored Llanos for a 5-1 lead. On the play, the Canaries threw out Mike Richardson at the plate on a relay throw from Abner Arroyo. A throwing error by Matt Imwalle allowed Dustin Jones to score the final run of the game in Sioux City's 6-1 win.
Micah Posey (1-3) allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out four in the loss. Ty Marotz (2-2) picked up the win for Sioux City.
The Canaries will continue the four-game series with the Explorers on Tuesday night at Lewis & Clark Park. Pat Mahomes will take the mound for the Canaries against Brad Guy for Sioux City.
The Birds return home on Monday, June 11. They will host the St. Joe Blacksnakes and traveling minor league act Birdzerk will perform, presented by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard.
