Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Canaries (4-8) and Saints (9-3) split a double-header on Wednesday night at the Birdcage. The Canaries won the first game in the tenth inning on a three-run home run by Justin Schuda. The Saints were victorious in the nightcap as Justin Lord pitched six shutout innings en route to a 4-0 win.

Last night, the first game of the series between the Canaries and St. Paul Saints was suspended after four complete innings due to rain. At the time the game was suspended the Saints led, 6-5, heading into the fifth inning.

Canaries reliever Sean Donlin and Saints pitcher Matt Pike took over when the game resumed on Wednesday night and dueled without any runs into the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Canaries outfielder Chad Hermansen led off with a double and scored on a double by Abner Arroyo to tie the game, 6-6.

The tie set the state for Justin Schuda's walk-off three-run home run to give the Canaries the first game of the series.

Lenny Bays (1-0) snagged the win (1-0) while Kevin Rival took the loss (1-1).

In the night cap, the Saints got on the board in the third when Pat Scalabrini singled, scoring Rob Fischer. A sacrifice fly by Victor Rodriguez brought in Mike Forbes, putting the Saints up, 2-0.

The Saints added two runs in the seventh inning for the 4-0 win.

The Canaries were held to just two hits in the game. Justin Lord (3-0) went six shutout innings giving up only two hits while walking none and striking out seven. Doug Johnson (0-3) suffered the loss while allowing only two unearned runs on two hits in 5.2 innings of work.

The Canaries and Saints will wrap-up the three-game set on Thursday night at the Birdcage. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
