Pensacola Pelicans News Release
It was a lively crowd Thursday night at Pelican Park as 1,462 fans packed the stands to see the Pelicans go for the sweep of the El Paso Diablos. Pensacola picked up right where they left off on Wednesday shutting out the Diablos through the first seven innings of play, but the game would have it's fireworks in the later innings.
Pelicans starting pitcher Clark Girardeau was virtually unhittable through the first six innings striking out 10 batters and allowing only three batters to reach base.
The Pelicans looked to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning when Palmer Karr reached first on a heads up play when strike three got away from the El Paso catcher with two outs in the inning. Bo Brown doubled behind him and then Rolo Avila drove in the two with a double down the left-field line, giving Pensacola a 3-0 lead.
Juan Rocha led off the bottom half of the seventh with a homerun to centerfield to get the fans back into the game and the Pelicans back ahead by two. Three walks and two hit batsmen later, Rolo Avila drove a pitch into shallow centerfield scoring two giving the Pelicans a five run lead.
The lead would not stand for long as the Diablos came right back and scored five runs in the top of the eighth, touching up three Pelicans pitchers and drawing three walks and hitting two homeruns.
In the bottom of the ninth, after Tony Pierce took care of the Diablos in the top, Trino Aguilar and Tim Dorn hit back to back singles giving the Pelicans a chance to win it. With one down Ed Montague stepped to the plate with the chance to be the hero. Montague delivered with a drive down the leftfield line scoring the speedy Aguliar and giving the Pelicans their most dramatic win of the season, 8-7.
