Canaries Salvage Tie In Huron

Huron, SD - The Canaries (0-1-1) and St. Paul Saints (1-0-1) played to a 4-4 tie in front of 2,583 at Memorial Stadium in Huron on Saturday night. Abner Arroyo scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the tenth inning on a wild pitch.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lead-off hitter Rob Fischer reached on a three-base throwing error by Canaries third baseman Chris Hall, and scored on a groundout by Victor Rodriguez.

The Canaries bounce right back in the bottom of the first inning. Ralph Santana led off with a double, and Kenta Suzumagano followed with his first of four hits on the night, advancing Santana to third. With Alexis Hernandez at the plate, T.J. Stanton threw a wild pitch that allowed Santana to score and tie the game, 1-1. Hernandez reached on a fielding error by first baseman Brian Becker to put runners back on the corners. Abner Arroyo followed with a sacrifice fly to score Suzumagano and give the Canaries a 2-1 lead.

The Canaries expanded their lead in the second inning. Chris Hall singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hall moved to third on Dwight Delgado's groundout and scored on Stanton's third wild pitch of the game, giving the Canaries a 3-1 edge.

The Saints trimmed the lead in the fourth inning when Victor Rodriguez hit a solo home run, making it 3-2.

In the fifth inning, Pat Scalabrini led off with a strike-out, but advanced to third base on a dropped third strike. After Tom Brice was hit by a pitch, Steve Butler reached on a fielder's choice that put runners at the corners. Rob Fischer followed with a two-out double scoring Scalabrini and Butler to put the Saints in front, 4-3.

The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the final inning. Abner Arroyo led off with a double, and advanced to third base on a single by Chad Hermansen. Arroyo scored on a wild pitch by Kevin Rival to tie the game, 4-4.

Tony Cogan started the game for the Canaries. He pitched three innings and gave up one unearned run on no hits. Cogan struck out two and retired the last nine batters he faced. Aaron Garrison pitched two innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits. Garrison struck out a game high four and walked none. Clint Marcus held the Saints without a hit nor a run for his three innings. Mark Roberts pitched one inning, striking out two, and John Wesley struck out the side in his inning.

The Canaries and Saints will meet again Saturday Night at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
