Canaries Rout Saints, 11-3

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (21-9) scored early and often in an 11-3 rout of the St. Paul Saints (16-13) on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium.

The Canaries opened the scoring in the second inning. Ben Van Iderstine singled and Tim Marks reached on an error by Saints shortstop Ryan Priddy. Angelo Fermin laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third for James Shanks. Shanks doubled to score Van Iderstine and Marks and give the Canaries a 2-0 lead.

The Birds added more in the third. Abner Arroyo reached on an infield single and Will Smith walked. With two on base, Matt Imwalle hit his seventh homer of the season to score three and put the Canaries up 5-0.

The Canaries continued the scoring in the fourth. Fermin and Shanks singled to get on base and David Keesee moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Arroyo singled to drive in Fermin and Shanks to put the Canaries up by seven. Wil Quintana followed with his eighth homer of the season, and the two-run shot gave the Canaries a 9-0 lead.

St. Paul got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Adam Olow led off the inning and reached on an error by Canaries third baseman Matt Imwalle. After Marcel Longmire walked to put runners on first and second base Brian Sprout doubled to bring home Olow and put the Saints on the board, 9-1. With runners on second and third, Brent Krause hit a sacrifice fly to score Longmire and cut the Canaries lead to seven, 9-2. Ryan Gripp singled to bring home Sprout and give the Saints their third run of the inning. After six innings, the Canaries led, 9-3.

The Birds scored for a tenth time in the top of the seventh inning. Will Smith led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Matt Imwalle. Tim Marks drove home Smith and gave the Canaries a 10-3 lead.

The Canaries got one more in the eighth. Keesee singled and advanced to second on an error by Saints left fielder Brent Krause. Keesee advanced to third on a flyout by Arroyo, and came in to score on a single by Will Smith to give the Canaries their 11-3 victory.

Pat Mahomes (5-0) pitched six innings for the Canaries giving up three runs, one earned, on seven hits while walking three and striking out seven. Charlie Rudd (3-2) suffered his second consecutive loss.

The Canaries return home on Monday night to host the St. Joe Blacksnakes. Monday night's game will feature traveling minor league act Birdzerk performing at the Birdcage presented by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard.
