Canaries Pull Away Late to Defeat Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB - Sioux Falls Canaries (6-8) center fielder Hunter Clanin's (2) two-out Grand Slam in the seventh inning broke open a close game and helped the visitors to an 8-4 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (6-7) on Friday night at Shaw Park.
It was tied 3-3 going to the seventh inning. Catcher Marshall Rich led off with a single. The big play early in the seventh was left fielder Wyatt Ulrich who grounded to Winnipeg shortstop Andy Armstrong but what could have been a double play turned into an error which opened the door for the Canaries. Sioux Falls eventually took the lead on a bases loaded walk by designated hitter Jabari Henry to make it 4-3. The walk/run was issued by Winnipeg reliever Cam Opp (1-1). Marc-André Habeck was summoned to keep it a one-run game, however, on his first pitch, Clanin attacked the ball out to left-center field.
Winnipeg highlights included third baseman Dayson Croes extending his hitting streak to ten games with a first inning single. Overall he was 2-5 with a single, double, and an RBI. Designated hitter Jacob Bockelie tied the game in the fifth inning with a double. He has six RBI's on this homestand and a team-high 13. Right fielder Max Murphy (2) added a solo homer in the eighth inning.
Sioux Falls used six pitchers. The winner was Christian Johnson (1-1). He allowed one run (earned) in two innings. Johnson walked two, and struck out one. Opp allowed four runs (none earned) in 1 2/3 innings.
Goldeyes starter Landen Bourassa lasted five innings. He gave up six hits, three runs (two earned) and struck out three.
The teams get together again on Saturday night with a scheduled 6:00 first pitch. The probables are Sioux Falls right-hander Colby Wyatt (1-1) versus Winnipeg's Joey Matulovich (0-2).

GOLDEYES SCALES
For the first time at home this year, the Goldeyes have dropped back-to-back games.
The Grand Slam by Clanin was the first in a game on either side involving the Goldeyes this season.
Despite the five runs allowed by the bullpen, only one was earned. Winnipeg relievers have allowed seven earned runs over the last 34 2/3 innings (1.82). And just one earned run in the last 16 innings (0.56) with ten strikeouts.
