
Canaries lose offensive game, 20-15

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-12) lost a battle of the offenses with the Lincoln Saltdogs (16-9) by an American Association record setting score of 20-15.
The Saltdogs were led by Pichi Balet, who hit for the cycle in a five-for-six, five RBI night. Bryan Warner, four hits and two RBI, and Brett Cooley, three hits and four RBI, also were standouts for Lincoln.
On the Canaries side, John Schmitz and Chris Hall had four-hit games while Chad Hermansen and Anthony Monegan each drove in three runs. Ten Canaries recorded an RBI in the game, and all nine in the starting line-up scored a run.
The Saltdogs took an early lead with a three-run first inning, but the Canaries scored two of their own runs in the bottom of the first when Chad Hermansen hit his 15th home run of the season to make it 3-2.
Lincoln got two more runs in the top of the second inning, and the Canaries answered with four runs in the bottom of the second, one of which came on Dennis Anderson's sixth homer of the season. After two innings, the Canaries led, 6-5.
The Canaries took a 9-5 lead with three runs in the third, including one on Bubba Smith's third homer of the season.
The Saltdogs answered with a solo homer by Pichi Balet and a two-run shot by Josh Patton in the second inning to cut the Birds lead to 9-8.
After the Canaries added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 11-8 lead, the Saltdogs batted around in the top of the fifth innings and scored five runs to take the lead, 13-11.
In the sixth inning Brett Cooley homered for Lincoln, and Pichi Balet doubled home Casey Gordan to complete his cycle. The runs put Lincoln ahead 15-11, a lead they would extend to 20-11, before the Canaries scored the games final four runs in the 20-15 defeat.
Jason Howerton (3-2) got the win despite giving up three runs on seven hits in two innings pitched. Jabe Beard (0-2) took the loss for the Canaries allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits.
The four-game series continues on Wednesday night at the Birdcage, which will be the "Night of 1,000 Prizes" presented by Drs. Berdahl and Feiock & Topps Trading Cards.
