St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - For the second time in three days, the St. Paul Saints didn't have to look far to bolster their bullpen. The team signed another local lefthanded pitcher today.
Gabe Eikum, who pitched four seasons for Northwestern (Roseville), joined the team today in time for their game tonight with Sioux City. The Plymouth, MN resident played his prep ball at Wayzata High School.
The 23-year old is the Eagles' all-time leader in strikeouts with 273 in 249 innings. He finished with a 17-22 won-loss mark for the small (enrollment: 1700) UMAC school that played against such rugged local foes as St. Scholastica, Hamline and St. Thomas.
It was there he drew the eye of Saints' pitching coach Jason Verdugo, who is also Hamline's head coach. "He's got a good arm and he competes well," Verdugo said. "Let's hope he follows in the steps of Charlie Ruud (St. Olaf grad who is 4-4 this year) and Brian Whinnery (ex-St. Thomas player who was the winning pitcher in his first outing Saturday night."
The Saints face Sioux City Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. and Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. before heading to Lincoln for a weekend series.
