Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-24) rallied from down 8-1, but couldn't make it all the way back in a 10-7 loss to the St. Paul Saints (19-21) on Thursday night at the Birdcage.

The Canaries took an early lead on a first inning home run by Chad Hermansen. Hermansen's 17th homer of the season gave the Birds a 1-0 lead.

St. Paul went ahead in the second. With the bases loaded, Adam Olow drew a walk to tie the game, 1-1. Brian Buchanan followed with a grand slam off the outfield scoreboard to put St. Paul ahead 5-1.

The Saints added to their lead in the fourth when Adam Olow doubled and scored on a single by Brian Sprout for a 6-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, Jeremy Frost walked and scored on a triple by Josh Renick. Renick scored on a single by Adam Olow, and at the stretch, the Saints led 8-1.

The Birds rallied in the home half of the seventh. With runners on the corners, Angelo Fermin singled to score Chris Hall. Ralph Santana singled to load the bases and David Hoffman walked to score Jake Smith making it 8-3. Chad Hermansen followed with a three-run double to make it 8-6. The double was Hermansen's 33rd of the season, one shy of the Canaries single-season record.

The Saints got two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Brian Sprout and Nick Gretz singled and the pair scored on a double by Jeremy Frost to give St. Paul a 10-6 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth the Canaries loaded the bases for Bubba Smith. Smith blasted a ball to deep left field, but it was caught in front of the warning track for a sacrifice fly. Only one run scored and the Canaries lost 10-7.

Justin Lord (11-2) picked up the win for St. Paul, Doug Johnson (5-8) suffered the loss for the Canaries, and Matt Hammons picked up his 20th save of the season.

The teams will play again on Friday night at the Birdcage where it will be a "Zip-Bobble Tower Giveaway" presented by Loosbrock Family Homes.
