Canaries end road trip with 8-4 loss

St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries (3-7) five-game road trip came to an end on Sunday afternoon with an 8-4 defeat at the hands of the St. Joe Blacksnakes (4-6).

The Blacksnakes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Scooter Jordan walked and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After being bunted over to third base, Jordan scored on a ground out by Mark Burke for the 1-0 advantage. Wil Quintana doubled and scored on Mike Rodriguez's second wild pitch of the inning, giving the Snakes a 2-0 start.

In the top of the second inning, the Canaries cut the lead in half. Alexis Hernandez led the inning off with a walk. He advanced to second base on a single by Justin Schuda and to third base as Chris Hall grounded into a fielder's choice. Hernandez came home to score on Johnny Kaplan's sacrifice fly making it a 2-1 ballgame.

The Canaries tied the game in the third inning. Ralph Santana drew a lead off walk and stole second base. Santana moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Blacksnakes starter Dustin Kupper. Santana scored to tie the game, 2-2, on an RBI groundout by Edgard Clemente.

St. Joe pulled back in front in the third inning. Wil Quintana was hit by a pitch and Terrell Merriman walked to put two on base for Jake Whitesides. Whitesides hit his second home run of the year to give the Snakes a 5-2 lead.

In the eighth inning the Canaries cut into the St. Joe lead. Clemente doubled and scored on a single by Schuda to make it 5-3.

The bottom half of the inning saw the Blacksnakes extend their lead. With the bases loaded Jimmy Mojica hit a slow roller to first base. Abner Arroyo had no play and a run came in to make it 6-3. Mark Burke followed with a two-run single to give the Snakes an 8-3 lead.

For a second straight night, the Canaries threatened to no avail in the ninth. Santana reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Hermansen to make it 8-4. Clemente followed with a walk, but with the tying run on deck, Arroyo grounded out to end the game.

Mike Rodriguez (0-1) took the loss allowing five runs on three hits in two-plus innings of work. Dustin Kupper (1-0) got the win for the Blacksnakes.

The Canaries return home to host the St. Paul Saints in a three-game series beginning Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
