Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-0) battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Sioux City Explorers (0-4) by the final score of 6-2 on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,487 fans.
Sioux City's starting pitcher Eric Wordekemper (0-0, 3.60 ERA) did his best to snap the Explorers early season slump, holding the Canaries hitless over the first four innings. The right-hander retired the first seven batters of the game, and carried his no-hit bid into the bottom of the fifth before Frank Martinez doubled into the right-field gap, later scoring on a Cameron Garfield RBI sacrifice-fly.
The Birds' tied the game up at 2-2 in the fifth, and took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh when Garfield scored on a wild pitch. Martinez capped off the come-back effort an inning later with a mammoth three-run home run that reached the parking lot beyond the right-field wall.
Martinez finished the night going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI's and two runs scored.
Canaries starting pitcher Joe Bircher (0-0, 3.00 ERA) looked good in his first start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings. The southpaw registered five strikeouts while walking one batter.
Reliever Josh Ferrell (1-0, 0.00 ERA) picked up the win in his second appearance of the season.
