St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - After destroying the Gary SouthShore Railcats pitching the St. Paul Saints got a much tougher test on Monday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. After scoring 28 runs over the last two games the Saints managed just four hits and dropped their first game of the season 3-2 to the Canaries.

Both starting pitchers were impeccable to start the game with Saints starter Alec Crawford and Canaries starter Stephen Bougher going toe-to-toe. Neither starter gave up a hit through the first three innings and Saints first baseman Angelo Songco collected the games first hit with a single in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth the Canaries got to Crawford when Blake Schmit hit a one out solo homer to left to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. With two outs Cameron Monger was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch ball four to Ethan Chapman. Frank Martinez then hit a high chopper through the right side to give the Canaries a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth the Canaries made it 3-0 when Chris Grayson led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single from Schmit. Crawford's night was done and he went 5.0+ allowing three runs on four hits while walking one.

The Saints managed just the one hit against Bougher until the seventh when Willie Argo led off with a double. He moved to third on a groundout by Songco and scored on a sacrifice fly from Nate Hanson to make it 3-1.

Saints rookie reliever, and Concordia-St. Paul lefty, Kody Knaus kept the Saints in the game tossing 3.0 shutout innings on one hit and it looked like the Saints might pull off some ninth inning magic.

Against closer Chase Johnson Argo walked with one out. With two outs Hanson doubled him home to pull the Saints within a run, but Tony Thomas struck out to end the game.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (1-0, 1.29) to the mound against Canaries LHP Misael Siverio (1-0, 0.00). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
