Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
In another close ballgame, the Canaries were unable to hold down the Jackhammers, falling to Joliet 7-6 Monday night at Silver Cross Field. It was a walk-off single that plated the winning run and ended the ballgame.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, Gabby Delgado led off with a walk. Two outs later he scored the winning run when Matt McCay singled to right field and he was waived on home.
Brad Foss took the loss for Sioux Falls after pitching both the 8th and 9th innings. The winning run was the only one he allowed in 1.2 innings of relief. JackHammers relief RHP Jeremy Hinderks (2-4) earned the win pitching a scoreless final two innings.
The Canaries once again jumped to an early lead when 1st inning singles by Billy Brown and Clark Parker placed runners at the corners. A sacrifice fly by Juan Tolentino and an RBI single by DH Marc Mirizzi gave the Birds a 2-0 lead.
Joliet answered in the second when Josh Loggins led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a single. He advanced to third base on Matt McCay's single before coming home on a sacrfice fly by John Lackaff's. The Birds gained the run back when Juan Thomas crushed a pitch beyond the left-center field wall for a solo home run and a 3-to-1 Canaries lead. It was his 11th home run of the season and 25th RBI.
A 3-run 6th inning gave the Jackhammers a 5-4 lead, but after an awkward play in the 7th tied the game, the Birds took back the lead with a Carlos Pagan sacrifice fly in the 8th.
The Jackhammers came back with a run in the 7th and eventually the game-winning single in the 9th off of Foss. The Canaries fell to just 1-and-4 versus Joliet in the season series.
The second game of this four-game series will be played at 7:05 pm on Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field. RHP Jose Robles (0-0, 6.00) will start for the Canaries, and RHP Nathan Kent (2-4, 4.68) will start for the JackHammers.
