
McCay's Magic; JackHammers defeat Canaries

Joliet, ILâ The Joliet JackHammers (18-12, 42-36) defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries (11-19, 27-51) 7-to-6 in front of 3,529 fans on Monday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers have won two straight and have a first place 1.5 games lead on Schaumburg and Kansas City in the South Division of the Northern League. The JackHammers are 4-and-1 versus the Canaries in the season series. This was the first game of an eight-game home stand.
In the top of the 1st inning, Billy Brown (2-for-5) led off with an infield single and advanced to second base on a throwing error. He moved to third base on Clark Parker's (1-for-5) single. Juan Tolentino's (1-for-4) sacrifice fly ball gave the Canaries a 1-to-0 lead. Later in the inning, Marc Mirrizzi (2-for-3) added a RBI single for a 2-to-0 Canaries lead.
Josh Loggins (2-for-4) led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a single. He advanced to third base on Matt McCay's (2-for-5) single before coming home on John Lackaff's (0-for-3) sacrifice fly ball to right field for his 31st RBI. The JackHammers trailed 2-to-1. The Canaries took back their 2-run lead when Juan Thomas (1-for-3) crushed a pitch beyond the left-center field wall for a solo home run and a 3-to-1 Canaries lead. It was his 11th home run and 25th RBI.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Allensworth scored when Bubba Smith (1-for-5) reached on a throwing error by third baseman Miguel Hernandez. The JackHammers trailed 3-to-2. The Canaries added a RBI single by Mirizzi in the top of the 5th inning for a 4-to-2 Canaries lead.
The JackHammers David Gordon (1-for-4) singled to start the top of the 6th inning and later scored on Gabby Delgado's (1-for-3) RBI single. Two batters later, Loggins connected for a 2-RBI double to put the JackHammers up 5-to-4. Loggins leads the JackHammers with 62 RBI. The strangest play of the game occurred in the top of the 6th inning with Carlos Pagan (1-for-3) at third base. After an Ally pitch, catcher Jeff Goldbach's throw back to the mound hit the batter, Josh Fulton (1-for-4), in the batting helmet. The throwing error allowed Pagan to score and tie the game. Pagan added a sacrifice fly ball in the top of the 7th inning for a 6-to-5 Canaries lead.
After Allensworth led off the bottom of the 7th inning with a single, he advanced to second base on Delgado's sacrifice bunt. Then, Bubba Smith (1-for-5) delivered a RBI double to left-center field to tie the game at 6-to-6. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Delgado led off with a walk. Two outs later he was at second base when McCay singled to right field for an RBI and the JackHammers won 7-to-6. Canaries RHP Brad Foss (1-5) endured the loss in relief. JackHammers relief RHP Jeremy Hinderks (2-4) earned the win pitching a scoreless final two innings. For the second consecutive game, McCay connected for the go ahead run batted in.
The JackHammers and Canaries will play the second game of this four-game series at 7:05 pm on Tuesday at Silver Cross Field. RHP Jose Robles (0-0, 6.00) will start for the Canaries, and RHP Nathan Kent (2-4, 4.68) will start for the JackHammers. The first 1,000 fans will receive a baseball card poster courtesy of The Herald News. Tuesday is also a Herald News Jammer's Book Buddies Reading Club Night, and this is the last Tuesday home game that General Admission ticket vouchers, for those who achieved their reading goal, can be redeemed.
