Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - After getting one of the best starting performances of the season from LHP Tayler Saucedo, the Vancouver bullpen melted down in the bottom of the 8th inning to hand a 3-2 victory to Hillsboro in the first of five games out at Ron Tonkin Field.
Vancouver opened the series with a run in the top of the 2nd inning as RF Sean Hurley doubled off the left field wall and later scored on a fielder's choice giving the Canadians a 1-0 lead. The run would be the only one allowed by RHP Tyler Bolton until the top of the 8th inning when 2B Ryan Metzler hit his first home run of the season to help the Canadians to a 2-1 lead.
With just six out separating the Canadians from a series opening victory, the usually effective LHP Stuart Holmes struggled in the bottom of the 8th inning, walking the first three hitters he faced including C Alexis Olmeda who scored shortly after LHP Brandon Hinkle came in to replace Holmes. The Hops would tie the game at 2-2 without having to bring a bat to the plate. Seconds later, LF Gerard Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly out to Canadians CF Andrew Guillotte that scored DH Stryker Trahan giving the Hops a 3-2 lead.
Closer LHP Alex Young came in for the top of the 9th inning and struck out the side (SS JC Cardenas, 1B Justin Atkinson and C Ryan Hissey) to record the save and give Bolton his first victory of the season.
Notes: RHP Tyler Bolton recorded 17 straight outs between the 2nd and 7th inning to help keep the Hops within striking distance as the right-hander struck out nine in the victory... LHP Tayler Saucedo went 5 1/3 innings on Wednesday allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking four in the no-decision... 2B Ryan Metzler hit his 1st home run of the season in the loss... Hillsboro SS Dansby Swanson made his professional debut going 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Dansby was the 1st overall selection in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft.
With the loss, Vancouver falls to 6-8, while the Hops improve to 9-5 heading into Thursday's game set for 7:05pm.
