Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Matt Newman roped a three-run triple to highlight an eight-run seventh inning rally, as the Vancouver Canadians defeated the Boise Hawks, 12-11, at Memorial Stadium.
The C's took advantage of five Boise walks in the inning, erasing a 10-4 deficit - sending 13 men to the plate. A Nick Baligod two-run single cut the margin to 10-6, Carlos Ramirez followed with a bases loaded walk, and Dan Klein singled home a run to get the visitors within two. Newman roped a Roderik Pichardo pitch into the right field corner to clear the bases - as Vancouver recorded season highs in runs and hits.
Boise had their chances late to tie the game, but couldn't get a clutch hit. Gioskar Amaya had a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cut the deficit to one run - but the Hawks stranded a runner at third in the seventh, two runners in the eighth, and the tying run at second in the ninth.
After Vancouver took a quick 1-0 lead on a Balbino Fuenmayor sacrifice fly, the Hawks played long ball - as Marco Hernandez hit a two-run homer and Rock Shoulders added a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give Boise a 5-1 lead. Amaya led off the second with a homer of his own to push the lead to 6-1.
The Canadians cut into the deficit with a pair of third inning runs and a fourth inning lead off homer by Klein to shave the lead to 6-4. The Hawks would extend the margin with a Xavier Batista RBI single in the fifth, adding three in the sixth - including a Bijan Rademacher two-run single.
Matt Johnson got the win for the C's, allowing one run in one inning of relief, while Pichardo took the loss for the Hawks, allowing three runs in one-plus inning.
Jason Leblebijian went 4-for-5 in the win for Vancouver, with Chung and Klein each recording three hits. Rademacher went 3-for-4 and Trey Martin went 3-for-5 in the loss.
Game 3 of the series is tomorrow night, with Tayler Scott meeting Bobby Brosnahan at 7:15 p.m.
