Canada, Slovakia advance to Semifinals

The Final Round Quarterfinals of the International Ice Hockey Federation's 2004 World Championships concluded with two games on Thursday in Prague, Czech Republic. The World Championships, which began on April 24, continues with the Semifinals on Saturday. The Gold and Bronze Medal games will be played on Sunday.

Canada advanced on to Saturday's Semifinals by defeating Finland, 5-4 in overtime on Thursday. Defenseman Steve Staios, who played part of the 1995-96 season with the Providence Bruins, scored the game-tying goal in the third period. Dany Heatley scored the overtime winner. Original P-Bruin Glen Murray is also playing for Canada, as is his Boston Bruins teammate, Patrice Bergeron. Antti Laaksonen, a member of the P-Bruins' 1999 Calder Cup championship team, played for Finland.

In the second Quarterfinal game on Thursday, favored Slovakia skated to a 3-1 defeat of Switzerland. Jozef Stumpel, a member of the P-Bruins' 1992-93 inaugural team, played for Slovakia.

The matchups for Saturday's Semifinals are now set. The U.S., led by former P-Bruins defenseman and head coach Peter Laviolette, will take on Sweden. Former P-Bruins Andy Hilbert, Hal Gill and Jeff Jillson are all playing for Team U.S.A. Boston Bruins forwards Michael Nylander and P.J. Axelsson are playing for Sweden.

The other Semifinals game will pit Canada against Slovakia.

The winners of Saturday's games will play each other in the Gold Medal game on Sunday. The two losing teams on Saturday will face off on Sunday in the Bronze Medal game.
