Albany Devils News Release
Lowell, MA - In a press conference at City Hall today, Carolina Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford announced that Tom Rowe has been named Head Coach and General Manager of the Lowell Lock Monsters. The announcement comes as Ron Smith, the team's head coach for the past three seasons, announced his retirement from coaching, and the Hurricanes announced a five year affiliation agreement with Lowell.
Tom has done an excellent job working with our players at the AHL level," said Rutherford. "With Ron Smith retiring from the coaching ranks, Tom is the natural selection to lead our young players."
"I am very excited about the opportunity given to me by Jim Rutherford and Jason Karmanos to continue to work with Carolina's young prospects," said Rowe. "I am also excited about the opportunity to continue my relationship with Elkin McCallum and management in Lowell."
Rowe, 47, has served as assistant coach and director of hockey affiliations for the past three seasons in Lowell. He began his work with the Lock Monsters at their inception in 1998, serving as the team's Vice President and General Manager. A native of Lynn, MA, Rowe played nine NHL seasons with Hartford, Washington, Detroit and Edmonton, totaling 185 points (85g, 100a) and 615 penalty minutes in 357 career games. He became the first American born player to score 30 goals in a season when he notched 31 with Washington in 1978-79.
