Canada Eliminated in Quarterfinals at World Juniors

It wasn't the ending that Moose Jaw Warriors' Denton Mateychuk, Brayden Yager, Jagger Firkus and Team Canada were hoping for at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Canada lost 3-2 to Czechia in the quarterfinals on Tuesday in Gothenburg, Sweden.

After falling down 2-0 in the first period, Yager helped set up Matthew Wood, who got Canada on the board 3:43 into the second period.

Canada would tie the game on a goal by Jake Furlong with 3:20 left in the second.

Team Canada had loads of pressure throughout the third period, but couldn't breakthrough and Jakub Stancl won the game for Czechia with 11 seconds to go in regulation.

Yager hit a post in the third period, finishing with one shot and plus-one on 12:54 of ice time. Yager finished second on Canada in scoring with two goals and five points in the tournament.

Mateychuk was named Player of the Game in the quarterfinals for Canada and also named one of Canada's top-three players in the tournament.

The Warriors captain led Canada with 25:03 of ice time and had three shots on goal in the quarterfinal. He finished with four assists in the tournament.

The semifinals will now be played on Thursday and the medal games go on Friday in Sweden.
