Atlantic City Surf News Release
Camden, NJ- A two-run home run by Stoney Briggs off Surf reliever Craig Mattson in the bottom of the eighth innning helped the Camden Riversharks avoid the sweep with a 4 to 3 victory. The home run overshadowed a good outing by Surf starter Jason Jacome who went seven innings and allowed only two runs on seven hits and retired the first tweleve he faced.
The Surf began the scoring in the second innning with the aide of a Jorge Meran sacrifice fly to get AC an early one to nothing advantage over the Rivershark starter Delvis Pacheco. The Surf would add to the advantage in the top of the fourth after Raul Marval doubled to with two outs in the inning and would come around on a single by Meran.
Camden would finally get their first hit off Jacome, a lead-off triple by Angel Pena, in the fifth, but he was left there. Also in the sixth, the Sharks loaded the bases with three consecutive singles and only one out. However, Jacome would get Dwight Maness to strike out and Angel Pena to ground out to end that threat.
But in the seventh, Stoney Briggs led off the inning with a double and Jacome would settle down to retire the next two batters but with two stirkes to Bryon Gainey, Jacome would leave a pitch over the plate and Gainey drilled it over the right-center field wall to tie the game at two.
The Surf would regain the lead in the top of the eighth when Ben Candelaria singled to start off the inning and he would give the Surf a 3-2 lead by scoring on a wild pitch by Shark reliever Derek Brown.
But in the bottom of the inning, Craig Mattson was called in to preserve the lead, he couldn''t. Mattson walked Maness then was able to retire the next two batters. He was one out away from ending the inning but made a crucial mistake to Byron Gainey and the mistake went up and over the left field wall to get Camden a 4-3 lead.
Camden would call on closer Del Matthews to record the final three outs and hold on to pick his twentieth save of the year and give Camden win number sixty this season.
The winner was Derek Brown in relief (4-1) and the loser was Craig Mattson (3-2).
The Surf return to The Sandcastle tomorrow to begin a nine game homestand, starting with three games with the Road Warriors. This homestand will determine what this team is made off to catch Somerset.
All Surf games can be heard on 1490 WUSS with your host Jacob Isaac.
